Transcript: Olana was the home and estate of 19th century Hudson River School artist Frederic Edwin Church. Now a New York State Historic Site and National Historic Landmark, Olana is situated high on a hill south of Hudson, NY. The 250 acre historic estate offers spectacular views of the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains and is one of the most popular cultural tourism destinations in the Hudson Valley. The Olana Partnership, a private not-for-profit organization, works cooperatively with New York State to support its restoration, development and improvement. Frederic Church first came to the Hudson Valley in 1844 to study with Thomas Cole, widely recognized as the founder of the Hudson River School. After two years under Coles tutelage in Catskill, Church launched what was to become an internationally successful career. After establishing a studio in New York City, Church was soon elected full member of the National Academy of Design. Shortly thereafter, Church made his first trip to South America, following German naturalist-explorer Alexander von Humbolts 1802 route from Columbia to Ecuador. Between 1857 and 1877, Church completed a few major paintings each year. Churchs collection at Olana contains sketches and studies for many of these great works. Smith said a lot of people consider him a socialist and even a Nazi and asked the president if he is aware of this. Well, I think that when you listen to Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck, its pretty apparent, and its troublesome, but keep in mind that there have been periods in American history where this kind of vitriol comes out, Obama responded. It happens often when youve got an economy that is making people more anxious, and people are feeling like there is a lot of change that needs to take place. But thats not the vast majority of Americans. I think the vast majority of Americans know that were trying hard, that I want whats best for the country. According to CBS, Obama said both Democrats and Republicans have a responsibility to tone down the rhetoric, but that much of it has to do with the current media environment in which extreme comments are echoed in the blogosphere. In other words, the problem is not so much establishment talk radio hosts like Limbaugh and Beck but the internet and alternative media. Obama wants the blogosphere (corporate media shorthand for alternative media) to tone down the rhetoric, that is to say follow the rules on discourse established by the government. It's been just over two years since the March 08 general election that saw the opposition capturing the states of Kedah, Penang, Selangor and retaining Kelantan. The opposition loose coalition calling themselves Pakatan Rakyat which comprises of PKR, DAP and PAS also swept to victory in the state of Perak, but leter defections by three of their state representatives saw them lose the state to the Barisan Nasional. In our attempts to look into the state of Indian affairs two years after the Pakatan victories we talk to community leaders for their assessment of the PR performance because it was on the back of Indian anti-BN sentiments and votes that resulted in the opposition victories. In this segment we talk to K Arumugam who is MPSJ counsillor and human rights activist and P Uthayakumar who, with his brother Waythamoorthy led the November 25 2007 Hindraf rally that saw 30000 (some say) ethnic Indians gather at the KLCC to demand their rights as citizens of the country.
